Cigar Humidors: Humidors with Glass Tops

Cigars connoisseurs store their cigars in humidors, which preserve and display the collector's finest cigars. They come in a variety of sizes and shapes and you can even have a customised humidor made to your specifications. Cigar humidors are a must have item for a serious cigar aficionado.

If you are wishing to purchase your own humidor, then you can do so for anything from $50 for a basic wooden humidor, to a few thousand dollars for a chic, bespoke cigar case handmade to meet your requirements.

Keeping your cigars in a climate controlled, cool storage box is the primary purpose of using a humidor. The cigars will be kept fresher longer and the overall appearance and flavour of the cigar will be better maintained over time. The more high end humidors will monitor and maintain their own temperature and humidity. One example of such a humidor is the Climatech, by Vigilant, a company that produces customised cabinets and humidors. Their system has an automated cooling, heating, humidifying and dehumidifying capacity that detects changes in surrounding climate. This model will function for up to 90 days without any manual input and 2600 cigars can be stored in this digitally controlled humidor.

Cigar enthusiasts may also look for extras to complement there standard humidor, and this is where the option of owning a travel, cabinet or a glass topped humidor has its appeal. To add a light weight and distinctive alternative to a cabinet humidor, a cigar smoker may consider the alternative of adding a glass top humidor to their collection. The glass top humidor is generally a type of 'desktop' humidor.

The popularity of this type of humidor is understandable as it is considerably cheaper than a cabinet humidor, averaging less than $200 for a variety of shapes and sized. The smaller size can be more convenient and these humidors are still able to hold 25 to 200 cigars.

If you are planning to store more than 200 cigars at any one time, then buying a chest-sized or cabinet humidor is probably a more ideal option for your collection. These are usually made with a Spanish cedar wood that will keep the humidity level consistent and further enhance the aroma of the cigars.

If you decide to purchase a glass top humidor, one of the advantages to this is that they will usually have a hygrometer that will monitor the internal humidity. This is of important to consider from two perspectives. Firstly, the glass top humidor can be exposed to varying climate fluctuations because of its transparent top and the gauge will serve to correct this. However, on a less positive note, this can be prone to failure in cheaper models and may end up more expensive if it needs replacing sooner.

The second consideration is that these hygrometers may require monitoring to ensure that your humidor is still working, and to ensure that your cigars don't come to harm in a faulty humidor.

Ultimately, if you purchase wisely, the desktop humidor will be a pleasing purchase that will keep your cigars in good condition and bring you pleasure for relatively little money.
